About Floyd Equipment Rental

My wife, Alison, and I met while we were students at Virginia Tech in the late 1990s. Just six months after our first date, I asked her to marry me and grow old with me. Twenty-seven years later, we're well on our way—and loving every minute of it.

Although our careers took us to Florida, my heart has always been in the hills of Southwest Virginia. We raised our three amazing kids in Florida, but thanks to my mom, BJ, and my stepdad, Dr. Pennell, who have called the Floyd area home for more than 30 years, we always had a reason to come back.

Owning a place in Floyd County had been a dream of ours for many years. In 2026, that dream became a reality when we purchased a small 285-square-foot cabin in Copper Hill. It doesn't have running water yet, but we're slowly turning it into our own little piece of paradise.

These days, Alison is still working in Florida while I spend as much time as I can in Floyd tackling projects around the cabin. It didn't take long for me to discover a problem: every time I needed equipment, I had to go down the mountain to rent it. If you know Floyd, you know that once you're on the mountain, you'd rather stay there.

I also realized something else. Renting unfamiliar equipment from a large rental company can be intimidating. I wanted someone to take a few minutes to show me how to use it safely and confidently, but that just wasn't part of the experience.

That's where the idea for Floyd Equipment Rental was born.

Our goal is simple: provide quality equipment right here in Floyd County, take the time to help customers understand how to use it, and even deliver it if they don't have a truck or trailer.

I'll admit there was one more reason for starting this business.

It gives me another excuse to spend more time in one of my favorite places on earth.

We're excited to serve the homeowners, farmers, hunters, and landowners who make Floyd County such a special community. We hope Floyd Equipment Rental becomes the kind of local business people recommend to their neighbors because they know they'll be treated honestly, fairly, and with respect.
